How to clean suede shoes

Suede shoes have a beautiful, soft finish and with a little regular care, they can stay looking lovely for much longer. The good news is that caring for suede doesn’t need to be complicated. With the right brush, cleaner and protector, you can keep your favourite pairs looking fresh and ready for whatever the day brings.

Step 1: Let them dry naturally

If your shoes are wet or muddy, allow them to dry completely at room temperature. Avoid radiators or direct heat, which can dry leather and suede too quickly. Remove laces if applicable and stuff shoes with newspaper to help wick away moisture and retain the shoe shape.

Step 2: Brush away loose dirt

Use a suede brush to gently remove dried dirt and dust. Remember! You don't need to scrub hard.

Step 3: Treat marks carefully

For stubborn marks, use our gentle shoe cleaner and apply in circular motions to lift dirt and stains. Wipe away excess moisture/foam using a clean cloth.

Step 4: Brush the suede back into shape

Once clean and dry, gently brush the nap so the suede looks fresh again.

Step 5: Protect them

Spray with our universal protector spray from 15cm away, allow to dry for a few minutes before re-applying. We recommend 3 coats for a water-resistant coating to form.

Got muddy shoes? Don't panic.
Let the mud dry completely first. Once it's dry, gently brush away as much as possible with a suede brush. Avoid rubbing wet mud into the material, as this can spread the mark and make it harder to remove. Follow the steps above.

Leather benefits from regular cleaning and conditioning to help keep it supple, avoid cracking and keep it looking its best.

A simple routine, similar to the suede instruction above but with an added moisture step.

1. Remove dirt and dust.
2. Apply our universal shoe cleaner
3. Allow the shoes to dry naturally.
4. Use our moistening leather cream or our wax oil for wax or oil coated leathers.
5. Buff gently with a soft cloth.
6. Protect them against everyday wear and weather with a final coat of our universal protector spray.

A few things to avoid:

• Don't put suede shoes in the washing machine unless the manufacturer's care instructions specifically say you can.
• Don't soak suede.
• Don't use direct heat such as radiators or hairdryers.
• Don't scrub aggressively.
• Don't use a leather product on suede unless it's specifically suitable for suede.
• Don't try a new cleaning product without checking the instructions first.
